Commonwealth Team Hails Gurgaon As An "Election 2005" And "Economic" Success
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Gurgaon On The World Map
Posted on Sun Mar 06, 2005 at 01:38:55 PM EST
[djain128] If there was anything that impressed the foreign delegates, in Delhi to attend the two-day conference on ``Improving quality of election management'', it was the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the recently-held elections in Gurgaon.
Said Karamjit Singh, commissioner in the Electoral Commission of London: `` I am very impressed with the use of technology and the role of the media in educating the country about the electoral process. The election commission site was updated immediately as well as the news channels were flooded with every possible information.'' India, apart from USA is the only country in the world that does not use paper ballots for its elections.
Delegates from about 38 countries were in Delhi to attend the conference organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in cooperation with the Election commission of India, from February 24-26.
While the election officers from various countries discussed issues like role and nature of election management body, use of technology, relationship between management bodies and political parties, about 16 delegates from Maldives, Malavi, Nauru, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania and the UK witnessed the voting process in Faridabad and the counting process in Gurgaon.
The visitors also hailed Gurgaon as an ``economic success'', saying that the IT destination of India, would soon be the IT destination of the world. They were overwhelmed by the numerous MNCs that dot the landscape of Gurgaon, along with the several highrises and swanky malls. Another delegate, Victor Ashby from Granada, commented on the culture, Bollywood and the electoral process. He said `` India is progressing in leaps and bounds and is rooted to its culture as well.''

Gurgaon Rated Number 1 City In India Based On Quality, Infrastructure, Financials, And People!
By Sanjay Sharma, Section Gurgaon On The World Map
Posted on Sun Jan 16, 2005 at 12:22:18 AM EST
GURGAON IS NUMBER 1 in the Offshore City Competitive Index based on a nationwide survey of top Indian Cities by Neo-IT, an American Firm that conducted the comprehensive survey. Survey based on people, number, quality, education, infrastructure, financials, and catalysts. (From the Times of India, January 13, 2005.)
WASHINGTON: Bangalore may have become the byword for worldwide off-shoring, but guess which satellite town tops the Garden City-turned-IT metropolis in the business? The good old Haryana enclave of Gurgaon. According to a nationwide survey of Indian cities considered the most attractive ITO/BPO services destination conducted by the firm Neo-IT, Gurgaon (100) pips Bangalore (99.6) to second place. They are followed by Pune and Hyderabad (tied at 99.3), Chennai (98.3), Kolkata (95.3) and Chandigarh (93). The 27-city OCC index included Tier II cities such as Mysore, Mangalore, Trichy, Coimbatore, Indore, Vizag, Nagpur and Shimla.
There was a time when Noida used to be rated higher than Gurgaon. Today Gurgaon in NUMBER 1 and Noida is not even in the top 10 list!
The numbers are what Neo-IT calls the Offshore City Competitive Index (OCC) and the metrics used to compute it include People (number, quality, education system), Infrastructure, Financials and Catalysts.
Mumbai (90.5) and Delhi (85.4) are in the middle of the pack, while Lucknow (78.4), Guwahati (77.1), Ahmedabad (74.7) and Goa (69.7) make up the bottom four in the list.
