SYL- Canal Water Has No Hope Of Reaching Farmers If Congress Is In Power Both In Punjab AND Haryana

The farming community of the northern districts of the state feels that the SYL canal is no more an issue as it is obvious that it would not benefit by its waters.
  • The Former Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha Bhai Gopi Chand Gehlot asserted that since the Congress has passed a resultion in Punjab Assembly to stop water to SYL and Haryana there is very little hope for farmers in Haryana to get water from SYL if Congress comes to power in Haryana also.
  • Bhai Gehlot further added that with Congess govt in punjab Centre and Haryana the Congress Haryana MLA's may not be able to look after the interest of Haryana farmers on SYL water issue because no Congressman is raising SYL issue in their poll campaign and none has the courage to ask Sonia Gandhi to force Punjab to complete SYL canal.
  • Knowing this fact he stated the all the farmers in state are up in arms against the Congress as they know that Congress shall compromise with their interest for the sake of power in state so they will vote heavily against Congress in the state polls and INLD shall come back to power.
Ranjit Singh of Pundri in Kaithal district doubts that the SYL waters would ever flow through Haryana. "Punjab is more powerful in politics as compared to Haryana and has more say at the Centre," he says.

The Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Assembly and the MLA from Gurgaon, Mr Gopi Chand Gehlot, has repeatedly called upon all the political parties in the state to stand united on the issue of the construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal project.
He has especially urged the MLAs to rise above party politics on the SYL canal issue as the project is the lifeline of the state, especially for those living in south Haryana.

Mr Gehlot also said that he hoped that Punjab would show generosity befitting an elder brother and implement the directive of the Supreme Court instead of seeking methods to wriggle out of it.
He said the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, was doing "everything possible" to build up a consensus within the state Assembly on the issue.
